1. What is your educational background and where have you worked previously?
I have a bachelor’s degree in Psychology from Penn State University, a masters in Rehabilitation Counseling and a PhD in Rehabilitation Counseling and Administration from East Carolina University. I have worked in a number of settings as a professional counselor including public high schools, inpatient medically managed inpatient facilities, outpatient facilities and private practices. Before moving to the instructional setting in 2017, I received tenure and promotion as a faculty member assigned to the SRU Counseling Center from 2008-2017.
2. What attracted you to Slippery Rock University, and in particular, the education department?
I wanted an opportunity to teach students the art of mental health and addiction related counseling and felt that I could benefit their learning with my previous 24 years of clinical experience.
3. What has been your most rewarding experience as a teacher/professor? If you cannot narrow it to one, describe one rewarding experience.
My most rewarding experience has been witnessing the personal and professional growth of the graduate students I teach.
4. What advice would you give to students who are entering or are currently in the teacher preparation program, and to SRU students in general?
Make the most of your education and consider graduate studies.
5. What were you like as a college student?
I was undecided until my junior year, so I have some respect for students that reach their chosen path through their development as an undergraduate or graduate student. I was much more focused and diligent in my graduate work and found that it related to the career in clinical counseling I chose allowing me to bridge what I learned into application as a counselor.
