Dr. Monique Alexander

What is your educational background and where have you worked previously?
I received my Ph.D. from Penn State University in 2016 in Curriculum and Instruction with an emphasis in Curriculum and Supervision. As a Graduate Assistant, I worked in the Professional Development School partnership with the State College Area School District. Prior to my work at Penn State, I was a fourth and fifth grade science teacher in Detroit, Michigan.

What attracted you to Slippery Rock University, and in particular, the education department?
I was attracted to Slippery Rock University due to its reputation as one of the premiere teacher education programs in the state of Pennsylvania. I was impressed with the diverse course offerings, areas of faculty scholarship and engagement, and commitment to strong pre-service teacher development.

What has been your most rewarding experience as a teacher/professor? If you cannot narrow it to one, describe one rewarding experience.
Thus far, my most rewarding experience as a professor has been watching students mature and develop over the course of the semester. I am always fascinated to see students wrestle with new ideas and construct their teaching identities as they encounter new concepts and ideas in the classroom.

What advice would you give to students who are entering or are currently in the teacher preparation program, and to SRU students in general?
While I am still learning more about all of the wonderful experiences we have for students in the program here, I would encourage new students to look for opportunities to engage with faculty outside of the classroom. There are a number of internships, clubs, committees and study abroad experiences that can connect students with faculty members that have similar goals and interests.
